Cleanse with a Juice Fast

I started doing these 10 day cleanses about 5 years ago. Recommended by my chiropractor, it basically goes like this.

First thing every morning gulp down 2 tblsp. of olive oil mixed with 1/2 the juice of a lemon. My doctor said that this will squeeze out the gall bladder of its bile. Kind of gross, just like the taste. So have some strong herbal tea ready to swish out your mouth. I recommend Good Earth Original or Celestial Bengal Spice.

Everyday drink as much water as you can, between a quart and 1/2 gallon. Also, get your wheat grass fix--1 to 4 oz. per day. Sorry, no caffeine, no alcohol, no salt, sugar, honey, or any condiments except Bragg's Liquid Aminos (its like soy sauce) and lemon juice.

Every Night:
Take a natural fiber product in a full glass of water, Perfect 7 is a good one and can be obtained at a health food store. Yes, you will wake up to pee at night.

No Fun, you say? Well, challenging, yes. How often do you really exercise your self discipline? Look at this as a body-temple yearly tune-up. Especially after all the excesses of December, no? Anyway, we're just getting started.

Day 1, 2, 9, & 10:

Along with your freshest juice available, your transition days allow for any fruit and vegetables that are organic. Raw or steamed OK.

Days 3-8:

Only water, fresh juice (blends are OK, but as a general rule don't mix fruits with vegetables), and herbal teas allowed. Please try to keep to organic. Why pollute yourself with sprayed chemicals, the goal is to purify your body.

If you don't have a juicer, and can't borrow one...well the juice blends in the market are OK (look for organic), but the problem is the high fruit content. If you drink too much fruit you will experience fatigue and weakness. The juice bar establishments is a good option (Blenders is not organic), in that they are fresher and you could get a custom blend of just vegetables. I tend to save fruit juices for the late afternoon or evening for dessert.

Day 9 & 10:

You will have to replenish the good bacteria in your bowels. Add yogurt, and pro-biotics (found in refrigerated section of health food stores). Also, drink fresh made apple juice, eat papaya, and cantaloupe to help with digestion and get your intestines back on track.

Sometimes I start this diet and it doesn't work for me. Once I felt sick and weak and had to stop. A special occasion might arise, so I would to cut down on the number of days with juice and end with two transitional days to get back to normal eating. Every year I try again, and learn what works, which builds my confidence. I discovered the Juice Man book, by Jay Kordich and just love his wisdom and recipes.

Good Luck and Good Health.
